Skagway to Whitehorse

The early part of the trip today was retracing our steps back towards Teslin to Carcross, YK. When we got there we found out that the Native Americans were dedicating an carving house so we got to watch the ceremony.

Some of the elders spoke as well as governmental representatives.

There is a big push to reacquaint the young people of the tribes to the traditions of their elders and carving totems is almost a lost art. This new carving house will allow that tradition to continue.

There were also parts of an old paddle boat that sunk nearby. They had resurrected the pieces and spread them out to put them in the approximate place they would have been had the boat been intact.

This plaque tells about James "Skookum" Jim Mason who found the nugget that started the Klondike Gold Rush. He was from this area.

We stopped at Caribou Crossing for lunch and to meet Michelle Phillips who is a woman musher.

The area is set up like an old town.

We even found some Dall sheep to take pictures off. The only problem was that after watching them for a while we discovered they were placed there and were dead like the other animals in the Wildlife Museum.

We got to play with some Husky puppies. They were so cute.

Here are some of the people in our group getting ready to take a dog sled ride.

The dogs are raring to go as Spike risks his life to take a picture.

This was in interesting collection of moose and caribou horns.

They even had a miniature golf coarse with an Alaskan mosquito as a hazard.

We stopped to take a picture of this green glacial lake.

We will take a short tour of Whitehorse after we arrive and get set up.
