Off to Chicken, Alaska

Today we headed off on the "Top of the World Highway" The highway actually starts after you cross the Yukon River and goes to the Alaska border. From the Alaska border on you are on the Taylor Highway. Most of these roads is unpaved, under construction, or potholed.

We started off the day with a ferry ride. Now we are used to ferry rides from Port Aransas to Aransas Pass, Texas. A nice big ferry with the control tower in the middle and room for two lanes of cars on each side. This was not one of those ferries!!

Thank goodness we were early and we were the only ones waiting to cross the river. As we understood it, they put a couple of rigs on these ferries. This is looking across the river from our vantage point in the motorcoach.

Here is Wayne sitting "calmly" in the driver's seat as we cross the river.

Across the river is what looks like a gravel ramp that we are headed for. And sure enough that is where we exited the ferry.

We soon understood why this is called "The Top of the World Highway." You climb for a long time until you are above the tree line and then you are looking down on vast expanses of God's creations.

We reached the Alaska border and had to go through customs. Shortly after that we saw these buildings.

We were supposed to make a rest stop at a cute little place on the road but as you can see it was abandoned.

The drive on into Chicken was also high and beautiful.

And then we arrived in Chicken. Chicken is a very small place with two RV parks, two places to eat, a gas station, and a bar. Oh, and of course, gift shops. We went to Susan's for lunch for soup and sandwiches and then next door to the bar to see their collection of hats and underwear.

Here is Wayne walking back to the campground through a field of fireweed.

We went back to the motorhome and took a nap and missed the trip to Trisha's Schoolhouse. After a dinner of barbecued chicken at Susan's we watched as one young lady (not from our group) got her underpants shot our of a homemade cannon so that they could be added to the collection in the bar.

When you are in Chicken you can't forget it as everything reminds you.

Here are some more of the people who are traveling with us. I am determined to get every one's picture before the tour is over. This couple are Bear's "parents."

Tomorrow we will finish go to Tok and hopefully better roads.
