Moving on to Anchorage

This morning we took off for Anchorage. Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska with at least 274,003 people and several different shopping centers.

But before we left I took this picture of a lodge high on a hill above the highway that probably has a nice view of the park.

We left following the Chulitna River.

It was still overcast but we were still seeing incredible scenery.

The way the clouds block the sunlight gives interesting plays of light on the mountains.

The landscape is so varied with rolling hills covered in vegetation and jagged mountains with snow still visible.

It is so obvious where the tree line ends.

There were several small lakes along the Parks Hwy.

It remained overcast for most of our trip.

We stopped at the "World's Largest Igloo." I was expecting an igloo made of ice blocks but this was an igloo built to be a hotel. The architect, if there was one, and the engineer, it there was one, didn't think this through and the Fire Marshall refused to pass it for occupation so here it sits decaying.

The dogs enjoyed getting out though.

We began seeing a little more blue sky as we got further south.
We drove over a deep gorge.

We are still seeing glaciers along the Alaska Range.

These look more like rolling hills than mountains.

This view towards Denali was taken from Talkeetna where on a clear day you can see most of the mountain. Today it was hidden in the clouds.

Here we are heading in the direction of Wasilla. That is the town where Sarah Pallin lives and also the town where one of Wayne's cousins, Genie, lives.

Surprise, Surprise!! We were about to go to Houston. Alaska that is. I couldn't resist getting a picture of the city limits sign.

I saw this weird looking house and took a picture of it. It reminded me of the Old Woman In A Shoe house.

We are following one of the other Phaeton's on the tour towards Anchorage and the mountains that are on it's west side.

Looks like we are going to have overcast weather in Anchorage as well.

These are some little island in the Knik.

This is called the Sleeping Indian Mountain. I don't see it.

Our lunch stop at Sheep Creek Lodge will be a later blog.
