Whitehorse to Dawson Creek

We left Whitehorse and headed to Dawson Creek. it was a pretty drive and we followed a river most of the way.

DSC03692

We saw signs that said to watch out for bison and sure enough we soon had to stop while this big fellow crossed the road in front of us. He was all alone which is not typical for bison.

DSC03698

We drove on for quite a while enjoying the scenery.

DSC03706

We suddenly came across a herd of bison on both sides of the road.

DSC03713

They took their sweet time crossing the road and these two decided to walk down the yellow line so no one could move.

DSC03720

The mountains were just as pretty as those we had seen earlier but not much snow.

DSC03725

We drove by some very clear lakes that you could see the bottom in.

DSC03734

We stopped at the beautiful lake and I got a picture with the mountains in the background.

DSC03737

Wayne got out to see how far out he could see to the bottom.

DSC03739

We continued on our way and saw this interesting crater like area in the mountain.

DSC03743

We also drove along pretty creeks and rivers.

DSC03759

We rounded a curve and came across this mountain goat in the roadway. There were several more but I didn’t get a good picture.

DSC03780

We also had a deer or caribou cow cross the road in front of us. We thought it was a deer but the people we talked to later thought it was probably a caribou cow.

DSC03783

The further we got from Whitehorse the further away the mountains got from the road.

DSC03793

I thought this area has some interesting stratification.

DSC03799

I caught this sunset just before we went to bed.

DSC03803

Tomorrow we will try to find a truck wash and then head towards Jasper, AB.

Whitehorse Sign Post Village

After we set up in Whitehorse I walked over to the Sign Post Village to look around.

DSC03677

As you can see there are lots of signs.

DSC03682

It is like a city with streets with signs on both sides of each post.

DSC03683

There seem to be a lot of signs written in foreign languages.

DSC03681

Also, if your city, county, or state highway is missing a sign I know where to tell them to look.

DSC03680

And people use everything for signs, but we didn’t leave anything behind.

While at the sign post village I also went to the Visitor’s Center to get my Yukon Passport stamped.  That evening we went to the Northern Lights Centre and saw their show.  It was there that I got my final and 20th stamp in my Yukon Passport and turned it in and got my Yukon gold pin.  I am now eligible for both the 1 and 5 troy ounces of Klondike placer gold drawing on September 25th.  Wish me luck.

Tok to Whitehorse

We left Tok around 8:30 and drove into the sun for several hours. This was a really pretty lake we saw on the way.

Again, we have lots of flat land between us and the mountains.

This is a very large glacier in the distance.

Not too long after we left Tok we entered into Canada.

The scenery stayed pretty much the same all the way.

I liked this little peak of a mountain peeking up from behind these flatter mountains.

Surprise, more mountains and more glaciers. Not that I'm getting tired of them but I think we are ready for a change of scenery.

We will stay in Whitehorse for three nights so that we can shop at the Wal-Mart and Canadian super stores and so Wayne can have some down time. When we leave here we don't know when the next time that we will have Internet will be. We are also without cell phone service. If you don't hear from us for a week or so don't worry.

Valdez to Tok

Even through we drove the same road going to Valdez, we are looking at it from a different perspective now. Also, there are some very low clouds that make for a very different look.

We can now see these three glaciers clearly as we leave town.

As I've said before, Valdez is known as little Switzerland and I can understand why.

More mountains and more glaciers.

Here is a closer view of the three glaciers.

Since we had so much rain, all of the waterfalls are flowing heavily.

The mountains are not as close in as we move away from Valdez.

And they are not covered with as much snow.

The drive to Tok was pretty in a different way from Valdez. We got in fairly early and stayed at Tok RV Village which was a very nice park with full hook ups and 50amp service, cable, and WiFi. Tomorrow we will try to make it to Whitehorse.

Last two days in Valdez

Monday I drove around town and took pictures of all the things that I had seen but not gotten pictures of. This is a boat on the side of the museum.

This is another boat and a bouy beside the museum.

This is a carvomg that is in on the college campus.

This is a picture looking right if you are standing in front of the motorhome. Lots of people bring their boats to this RV park.

This is looking straight out in front of the motorhome.

So is this one.

This is looking down to the left of the motorhome. We were on the front row and had a great view.

As you can see, the fireweed has bloomed all the way to the top and is now dying. That means that summer is over so its time to leave Valdez.

Tomorrow we will leave for Tok.

Last day of fishing on Sunday, 8-23-09

I was wrong when I reported that George was going home on Sunday.  He stayed today and he and Wayne went out fishing and came back with their limit again.

Here they are coming back in the boat”.

DSC03571

Here they are going back in the boat because they couldn’t get under the next walkway.

DSC03573

This is the largest fish Wayne caught

DSC03574

As you can see there were three that were about the same size.

DSC03576

This is the boat that I think that my richest friends should go together and buy.

DSC03572

I figure that Wayne and I could fly up here in May and take the boat around to Seward and Homer for their respective halibut and salmon fishing seasons and then back to Valdez for more.  Friends/Investors could fly up for the various fishing seasons and Wayne and I could guide and wine and dine them while they were here.  We could live on and maintain the boat until the end of July then we could pull it to store or hire someone to sweep off the snow so it won’t sink.

I know it is a pipe dream but I loved Alaska and would do almost anything to come back on a regular basis.
