Marynelle catches dinner

The main reason that we came back over to the Oregon coast was so that I could use the new crab net that I bought. I bought a shellfish license yesterday so I would be legal. Wayne and I went out this afternoon with no experience and with two chicken drumsticks. We bought another crab net from the man who makes them so I could throw out two nets. We rigged up both nets and Wayne threw them out for me. The first one I pulled in I caught this beautiful dungeness crab plus a lot of smaller ones.

We brought in the nets several more times but didn't get another keeper. The drumsticks were gone quickly so we packed up and left. Next time we will bring more drumsticks. Here I am showing off my catch.

The crab was feisty until the bitter end. He was boiled, cleaned, and will become dinner tonight.
We will go back out tomorrow.
Catch you later.

More Echo and Beyond

On Tuesday evening, one of Wayne's classmates from the fourth grade in Echo and his wife came over to see us. After visiting for a while at the motorhome, we all went out for dinner. This is Bob and Gloria. Bob and Wayne had not seen each other in 53 years.
On Wednesday we met Wayne's cousin, Marvin, for lunch and then went back over to Aunt Clarice's to visit. I took some pictures of her beautiful roses.
The lavender rose has always been one of my favorites.

She has rose gardens in both the front and back yard and they are beautiful.

I took a better picture of Aunt Clarice. She is Wayne's father's sister.
Thursday was traveling day. We drove back along the Columbia River and this time we got a peek at Mt. Hood.

The Columbia has several dams so it is wider in some spots than others.

This is the water gushing from one of the dams. They had to build fish ladders at all of the dams for the salmon so they could get upstream to spawn.

This is an old lift bridge. We used to have one in Corpus Christi but they tore it down.

This is a closer view of Mt. Hood. It is still covered in snow. The last time we were in this area in July of 1991, it snowed on Mt. Hood.

We passed Malmouth Waterfall again and I couldn't resist taking another picture. I love waterfalls.

We stopped at Farmer Johns for some strawberry shortcake for me and a strawberry milkshake for Wayne. They had all kinds of fruit and vegetables and you could see where they came from in the fields.

We arrived in Lincoln City around 2:30 and got set up. We went to dinner at the Chinook Winds Casino and Resort and then we played blackjack for a while. Between us we came out ahead.
This morning we went down to the beach at low tide and I backcombed for agates and other pretty rocks. We had lunch at Mo's and then came back home. I got my crabbing license so I plan to go out soon.

I'll touch base again soon.

breakfast and history

I had trouble with the barbecue pictures so go to http://picasaweb.google.com/marynelle/SundayFamilyCemeteryOldBuildings?feat=directlink to view them. The young women are Marvin and Jaimee's daughters and the children are their grandchildren.

This morning we met at Denny's for breakfast.

There was eleven of us.

After breakfast we drove out to see the old barn where the young man who killed Wayne's grandmother's sister was found hanged. The people who own the property have kept it exactly as it was in 1903.

This is the sign outside the Echo Museum telling about the different names that this location has gone by.

This is the First Methodist Church of Echo.

This is the building that Wayne's Boy Scout Troop met in.

We drove over to the park that is on the site of old Fort Henrietta that was on the Oregon Trail. This is the blockhouse. They think there was one at each corner of the Fort.

This was the building that served as the original jail.

They have an exhibit of antique fire fighting equipment at the park.

This is what the Echo Volunteer Firemen wore.

This was a sign that was displayed somewhere telling people what to do in case of fire. I wonder how long it took them to get to your fire if you decided on the second contact option. : )

There was also a covered wagon museum.

This wagon is obviously used in night parades, etc.

I assume this was the typical dress of the women coming West in the covered wagons.

Here is Wayne by the Old Oregon Trail Sign in the park.

This gives new meaning to "flower bed."

We arranged for someone to come and open the Echo Museum. Here we are waiting for it to open.

The museum is housed in the old bank building.

I think the museum resembles an antiques store more than a museum but we found some interesting things. There was an article about the hanging in the barn and we found pictures of Aunt Clarice and Cousin Nannette when they were in high school in Echo. We also found the book Martha Jane, American Pioneer which is about the Stamper family ancestors.

Chip and Babs had to head back to Boise, Raymond, Karen, and Patty went over to visit with Aunt Clarice, and Wayne and I headed back to the motorhome to await one of his elementary school friends.

Till later.

Family and History

Sunday morning everyone met over at Wayne's Aunt Clarice's to visit. This is Chip and Babs from Boise, Idaho. We last saw them in 1991 when we did the Oregon Train 150th Anniversary.

This is Raymond and Karen from Puyallup, WA. We hadn't seen them since 1991 either.

This is Wayne's Aunt Clarice.

After visiting for a while we drove up to the Echo Cemetery. All of the flags were flying for Memorial Day Weekend.

We found the Wayne's Grandparents headstone.
We also found his great-grandmothers headstone.

This is Wayne's cousin Patty and her youngest son, Jeremy.

This house is on the street that you have to drive on to get to Clarice's. It belongs to a man that Wayne know as a child. His wife dresses the mannequins.

This is one of the signs showing where the Oregon Trail went.

This is looking towards the museum on main street. The building on the left used to be a meat market and the museum at the end was the bank.

This is the house that Wayne and his family lived in when he was a child.

This is Aunt Clarice's house next door. That's Wayne getting ready to go in.

That afternoon we went over to Clarice's son, Marvin's, house for a barbecue. This is Marvin and his wife Jaimee.

I am going to include the pictures from the barbecue in the next blog. You can check out all of the pictures at: http://picasaweb.google.com/marynelle/SundayFamilyCemeteryOldBuildings?feat=directlink
Till then be safe.

Drive to Echo, OR and visiting with cousins

The "mackerel" two posts ago was, of course, a halibut and not a mackerel.

The drive to Echo was beautiful. We followed the Columbia River most of the way. As you can see we were just a lane away.

We passed Malmouth Falls on the way but didn't stop.

The rolling hills on the other side of the Columbia were beautiful.

At one of the rest stops a girl was feeding four squirrels.

They were very tame and came right up to her.

We spent Friday visiting with Wayne's Aunt Clarice and Cousin Patty. Here is Wayne with Patty.

On Saturday afternoon Wayne's Cousin Raymond and his wife, Karen came from Puyllup, WA to join us for the weekend.

Later that evening another cousin, Chip, and his wife, Babs, came in and we all drove to Pendleton for supper. This is an old building in Pendleton with curtains painted in the window.

On the way home I got a picture of the beautiful sunset.

Sunday we will have a barbecue at another cousin, Marvin's, and his wife, Jaimee's.
