Sand Dunes and Crabbing

After a nice lunch and rest we drove out to one of the Oregon Sand Dunes recreation areas.  We drove up to the Oregon Dunes Overlook  and got some good pictures of the dunes and the ocean.

Unlike the dunes on the Gulf Coast, off road vehicles are encouraged to run wild.  We didn’t see any on the dunes while we were there but there was a whole group crossing the road on our way out.

We also caught a glimpse of the Umpqua Lighthouse from the sand dunes road.

We went back to the coach and got our crab traps and bait and headed out on the crabbing pier to try our luck.

There were three high school age young people already there and they had caught about five keepers.  I have no idea how long they had been there but it had been a while.  They were using big crab pots.

They warned us about the seals who were trying to steal the bait.

Our crab traps were made for fishing off the shore.  They lay flat on the bottom and then collapse when you pull them in.  Here is Wayne with the first one we caught.

You could probably tell that this one was NOT a keeper  nor were any of these.

The seal kept making appearances.

I walked out to the end of the pier and took a picture of the Winchester Bay RV resort where we are staying.

The flags of the left of the two fifth wheels are on our coach.

There were also a who bunch of birds sitting on the posts at the end of the pier.

This picture shows where the Pacific Ocean comes into Winchester Bay.

We caught lots of little crabs and a few females that were large enough.  Unfortunately you can’t keep the females.

Oh well.  There is crabbing all along the coast so maybe another day.
