We left Fair Oaks bright and early Saturday morning. We drove north on IH 5 to Redding and then turned west on 299.
We drove past some historic towns and beautiful lakes
and some towns with interesting names.
Some of the mountains have a little snow left on them.
The Klamath Mountains are beautiful.
I found this interesting old clock on an old building. I’m not sure what the little bell at the bottom is for but it is interesting.
Soon we were following the Trinity River. It’s a good thing that Wayne didn’t have a California fishing license. If he had we might never have made the coast.
We spent the night at the Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata, CA. It was a nice park and we took Trouble for a walk. Sunday morning we started out late as we didn’t have far to go.
Today we are driving on Hwy 101. As we crossed over the mountains we finally saw the Pacific Ocean.
It was hazy but you could make out the peninsula in the distance.
We also went past some bays. These are so different from our bays with forests coming right up to the edge.
Parts of 101 go through the Redwood National Park.
We saw a sign for cherries and pulled into a parking lot. While Wayne bought cherries, I took pictures of a downed redwood tree.
The haze began to clear up and we could see the ocean more clearly.
We alternated driving along the coast with driving through the redwood forests.
We went out on this peninsula when we were in Crescent City, CA before.
We arrived early afternoon at Beachfront RV Park at the Brookings Marina. There is an interesting sculpture at the entrance. All sides are carved.
You can see our motorhome to the right of the sculpture.
This is the view of the ocean to the north from the bulkhead.
And this is the view to the south. I walked down on the fine black sand but didn’t find anything I wanted to keep.
Since we were in one of the best areas to see the eclipse last evening we were hopeful but the fog rolled in and obscured the sun. This morning we awoke to clouds and it wasn’t long before it started raining. It’s a good thing that I had planned on doing laundry today.
