We awoke to much clearer skies this morning. We even saw a small fishing boat headed out to sea.
We could actually see the coast line.
The sky towards the mountains behind us still looked pretty dark.
We drove back south towards Crescent City, CA. I saw a rock in the water that I wanted to take a picture of and we took a back road and got a couple of pictures overlooking the small town cemetery.
Notice how the trees are mis-shappened due to the wind.
As we neared the first point of interest the low tire pressure light came on so we drove straight into Crescent City and found a tire place. We had a rather large nail in one of our tires.
After the tire was fixed we drove back north to go out to Point St. George. Our neighbors, Greg and Connie, had told us about the lighthouse here which cost more to build than the Statue of Liberty.
There are still some buildings here but from the sign, I am assuming that there are also lots of ruins.
You really can’t see the lighthouse from land. It is eight miles out on the end of some jetties. Wayne was able to get a picture with his high powered lens and I was able to enhance it with Picasa.
This area also was settled at one time. Now alls you see are wild flowers and the rocks in the water.
Wayne and I were both taking pictures.
This is the same rock from a different vantage point.
When we left Point St. George we turned right on the Pebble Beach Road.
I’m not sure that Pebble Beach is an appropriate name. I think I would have called it Rocky Beach.
Since it was getting time for lunch we stopped at the Apple Peddler Restaurant. The food was just so, so, but I recalled that we ate at this same restaurant when we visited here in the early 1990s.
Leaving Crescent City we passed the Trees of Mystery and the Drive Through Tree. We saw the Drive Through Tree when were were here in the 1990s. We were on our way to see an elk herd that we had seen on the way up. We took the Newton Drury Parkway because it went through the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and the Elk Prairie.
We went by the viewing area and there were no elk. We drove further south to an elk viewing area and again there were no elk. Luckily Wayne had spotted some up by the tree line and we found a way to get close enough for him to get pictures with his big lens.
Driving back across the Klamath River Wayne got this shot of two of the four golden bears that guard the bridge.
His camera really does a good job on close ups.
Last stop was the Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City. When the tide is low you can walk across to the little island and visit the lighthouse and museum. We chose not to go.
Back in Brookings we stopped at Dairy Cream for a sundae and a milkshake. Then we came back to the coach and took Trouble for a walk. It got up to 61 today but the wind off the ocean makes it jacket weather.
