We left the harbor and headed out towards a whale habitat in the ocean. We passed beaches that were accessible only by boats where people had set up housekeeping for the day.
As we got closer to the end of the Cape we could see some of the old lighthouses. This island has no electricity. At one time there were many whale processing plants on the island. These houses and the lighthouse burned whale oil.
We were told that these birds have probably never seen land.
There were several other ships out looking for whales as well.
It took awhile but we found three whales swimming close together. Here are two of them.
We got to see them surface several times and I even caught a blow.
The whales were incredible close to the boat. It you look carefully you can get an idea of how large they were by their shape underwater.
The humpbacks were joined later by their smaller cousin the Minke whale.
We were even lucky enough to catch some of the humpbacks going down for a deep dive and showing us their tail.
And so our trip came to an end.
